Madrid - Part 2

We left Madrid last Friday (13th Oct) and it's now Monday 16th October.  The tour has been great so far but we haven't had a spare minute to attend to this blog.  It's now 11:35 pm so I'm just going to add some photos from our last days in Madrid.  Just a few comments!

LAST DAYS IN MADRID

Loved seeing the Cervantes/Don Quixote statues in Plaza de Espana.  Don Quixote representing our "dreamer" personality and Sancho Panza representing our "reality" personality.  Kept hearing the music from "Man of La Mancha" in my head for days.

Debod Temple from 2nd century BC, transported to Madrid.  It was saved from the rising waters of a dam.

A parade held on Thursday 12th was used by many people living in Madrid to proudly wear the Spanish flag as a sign that they want a united Spain.  (They do not want Catalunya to break away.)

The bear at the strawberry tree marks the very centre of Madrid.

We left the exchange apartment in Madrid and went to the hotel to meet the tour group.  Dick and Debbie (wonderful friends from North Carolina) were delayed.  We knew they were due at about 10:30 pm so we waited in the lobby for them.  As you can see, there was a very warm reunion!
(Bad photo but had to be included!)

The highlight the next day was the Prado Museum.  Wow.  I was surprised by the emotion it stirred.  Sadly, we were not allowed to take photos inside.

In the afternoon, we went out to El Escorial, the historical residence of the King of Spain.  It has been a monastery, basilica, royal palace, pantheon, library, museum, university and hospital!

That night, we showed Dick and Debbie a small part of the "old city" area of Madrid.  They loved the market and tapas samples.
